Running Club

The TECHniques Center is passionate about developing students and tutors holistically. This is done by encouraging excellence in academics, as well as in activities outside the classroom.  Jac and I founded the TC Running Club in the Fall of 2013.  Jac aside, none of us are marathon runners.  We simply run in pursuit of excellence.

We founded Running Club on the following philosophy:

“If you run, you are a runner.  It doesn’t matter how fast or how far.  It doesn’t matter if today is your first day or if you’ve been running for twenty years.  There is no test to pass, no license to bear, no membership card to get.  You just run.” –John Bingham

Running Club is about commitment, discipline, and motivating others.  Running Club is a way for the center to encourage health and productive habits.  We incorporated the FISH philosophy at the TECHniques Center last semester.  This ideology is one that strives to better the environment at the workplace.  One of the tenants of this philosophy is the simple commitment: be there.

Whether we’re running in a pack discussing the meaning of life, or out for a 1-mile jog at our own pace, these bi-weekly meetings have encouraged me to simply be present every week, while simultaneously achieving more as an athlete. What is important of us during these club meetings is not that we are able to keep up with running club’s 6 foot members or sprint Jac’s 3.4 mile routes… Running club is an extension of the FISH philosophy as we make the choice to show up week after week. Ultimately, we are present at running club for each other, as well as our own personal, physical, and mental health.

I am continuously inspired by those who attend running club. While our numbers dwindle around midterms and finals, the dedication of those who attend is a testament to the pursuit of excellence.

My motivation for running is embodied in the following quote by Colin Powell:

”If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.”
