Major Decisions: How Do You Choose?

Nearly 70 percent of all college students change their major at least once during their college career! This sounds like a lot, but when you think about it, choosing a major is a big deal! While many college graduate may not purse careers that are directly related to the major they choose in college, they still spent a lot of time studying that major, so why not make it a field you like? Texas Tech offers over 150 majors and even more minors, so how do you choose??

First things first, you don’t have to pick a major the first time you step on a college campus. Lots of student feels pressured by their parents, friends, or advisors to pick a major right away, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Take some to explore the options. With so many choices, how do you really know what you want to do until you see all of the possibilities? You may find something that stands out to you that you never even considered.

Look into the classes that are required for the major. If it requires 6 semesters of math and you hate math, then maybe that major isn’t for you. On the same note, if you know the career path you want to have in the future, look into what major will allow you to pursue that career.

Take an advanced course in the field. This will help you figure out if you are really interested in the subject or just mildly intrigued. Many of the introductory classes are a watered down version and don’t provide the same insight into what the major really entails.

Look for things you are good at! You would be amazed at how well you will succeed if you choose something you are already good at! With that being said, don’t be afraid to try new things either.

Find something you are really interested in. There is no point taking numerous classes for something you don’t actually want to learn about. Spending four years studying would be a lot nicer if you pursued something you found enjoyable. The big thing is, don’t ever pick a major just to please someone else! That is just a recipe for a disaster.

Lastly, stay calm! Picking a major is a big deal, but don’t drive yourself crazy thinking about it! The major you choose does not define you!

Texas Tech offers a ton of resources to help you find the best fit, including the Majors and Minors Fair! This year, the M&M Fair will be held on Wednesday, October 21st from 11am- 1pm at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center. Stop by to mingle with professors, advisors, current students and many more to see what possibilities are out there!
