Around the TECHniques Center, evidence is everywhere. Empty water cups, crumpled up reviews, students pouring over books, and the occasional student or tutor catching a quick nap in the individual study room.
Finals week is upon us.
While that phrase sparks fear into many on campus, our students have done a tremendous job answering the challenge. Our students are as driven as ever, and our tutors are working as hard as ever to make sure students are as prepared as possible for that final exam.
The end of the semester is an exciting time of the year, although it can be stressful. But this is the time of the year where students and tutors reap the rewards of their year-long hard work. This is the time when they realize that by doing so well earlier in the year they are in a position to make better grades than they ever thought possible. It was just a matter of unlocking the potential inside.
The very basis of our program at the TECHniques Center strives to find the right “techniques” or patterns that allow our students to perform at their highest level possible. It is not a matter of being smarter, it is more about finding how each student learns, and how they can utilize material they already get from professors, but streamline it so they can understand, process, and apply the information. Using independent learning techniques, and having consistent peer tutoring as a support system, our students are thriving! We look forward to them showcasing their learning this week, and enjoying a well-earned break!
“Don’t be afraid to make a mistake. Mistakes give us an opportunity to grow and development so that something that was once weak can be made strong.” -Michael Abbott, Academic Counselor
We never forget about our tutors either. Our tutors are the backbone of our program, and their hard work does not go unnoticed. While they pour their time and energy into helping our students succeed, they too are wrapping up finals and either looking forward to internships, graduation, advanced degrees, and professional job opportunities. In this graduating class of tutors, we have many going out for advanced degrees in places such as Washington State, Michigan State, and Texas A&M (we will forgive the latter!). Furthermore, many more will enter the professional world as engineers, businessman, nurses, and physical therapists, among many others.
At the TECHniques Center, we focus a lot on the positives, and the consequences of actions. Because our students and tutors have worked so hard all year long, finals week might not be as daunting as it might have been. Because they have worked hard not just all year, but perhaps all four or five years, they will have professional opportunities that were previously deemed unrealistic. The next step is only a short step away!
“My first day at the TECHniques Center I walked into my office to see welcome signs, cards, and notes welcoming me to my new job. One of the quotes that was already hanging up, and has continued to do so since I started, is by Betty Bender and says “When people go to work, they shouldn’t have to leave their hearts at home.” This quote has stuck with me each day, and I have seen it in each student and tutor who is part of our program. Our counselors and tutors truly care for each other and the students here, and find that this is much more than just a place of employment. The students here also see this from those around them, as well as put their hearts into the assignments, tests, projects, and education they work so hard to complete and achieve. The TECHniques Center is much more than just an office on campus, a place to work, or a place to study. It’s a hub of those that bring their hearts to work each day and are all here for the same reason.” -Katie Ericson, Academic Counselor
We look forward to seeing the results of the hard work of our students and tutors this semester. Good luck, and as always, come by and let us know how you are doing! We are proud of every single person in our program, and we can’t wait to celebrate the end of a successful semester with you!
